Ideas for Teaching Children
God gathers us to bless us.
The map and the activity page at the end of this outline could help your children understand what God commanded in Doctrine and Covenants 37:3. Maybe you can help them find the places mentioned in these revelations. You could also help them find a phrase from Doctrine and Covenants 38:31–33 that describes why God wants His people to gather together.
Movement is so important.
1. Put these flags around the room. I don't have every flag; if a child knows their lineage, and you don't have the flag, have them make their own. The majority of the early saints came from England/ Wales, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. So, I'm going to stick to the history.

Some Saints were already in America traveling from Fayette.

Hand out papers that look like this:

Have the students draw themselves as if they were saints of the early church.
Then, have them choose which country they came from. Have them go stand by their flag. Tell them that they are going to gather in Ohio (Show them where it is taped on the board).

You can read the scriptures now or at the end. Have them act these things out as their Saints move closer to Ohio......" some of them will have to go through some really hard things to get to Ohio. Crossing rivers, walking for a very long time. Some will have to walk in the very cold weather, and some will have to walk in the rain. Some will have to come by boat and sell everything they own to gather with the Saints. Continue until they can tape their saint on the board next to Ohio."
Why do you think it was so important for the Saints to gather? How does God as us to gather today?
Here is a video they can watch.
D&C 29
Heavenly Father prepared a plan of salvation for me.
To help the children understand God's plan, make signs with these terms: pre-mortal life, the Creation, the Fall, Earth life, and the Second Coming. After explaining each term (see D&C 29:9-45), give each sign to a different child, and ask them to stand in a line in the correct order to show each event occurs in Heavenly Father's plan. Each child could share what he or she knows about what is on his or her sign. Help the children see how knowing about Heavenly Father's plan helps us become more like Him and the Savior.
The CFM- for families book also suggests something similar. I made this puzzle according to those directions, but if it is too much for you kids, then just teach to your kids level.
Smaller version:

Mitzi at Comefollowmekid.com has additional ways of teaching this puzzle.
I love big floor puzzles that everyone can see, also the primary manual suggests making signs for the children to hold, the bigger version can serve as both.

I saw this and thought it would be fun for older children to fold some origami pieces as you learn about a hen gathering her chicks.
My last activity, for older children and families. Someone rolls a dice, answers the question and then gets a treat if the answer is correct. You can minus the treats, but I know it is a huge motivation for my kids to gather and study the gospel.

See you next week.
Love,
Crystal
