Paying tithing opens the windows of heaven.
God’s people have always been commanded to pay tithing (see Genesis 14:17–20; Malachi 3:8–11). As you study 3 Nephi 24:7–12, think about why God asks His people to pay tithing. These questions can guide your study:
I want to start out asking my class if anyone has a tithing story, big or small that they would be willing to share. If no one shares that is ok. At least it gets them thinking.
Ask before reading "I want you to find God invitation in this scripture." Read 3 Nephi 24:10.
What is God inviting us to do?
God is asking us to ask Him for proof? Can we do that?(: How many other times in the scriptures does God tell us not to take HIs word for it, but ask Him? (I can think of Moroni's promise, but there might be more.) So when we pay our tithing we have the privilege of asking Him for proof. Maybe, down the road we will get in a car reck or experience a miracle and because of our prayers we will be able to feel the spirit that we were blessed because we paid our tithing. If we are earnestly seeking, everyone one of us can have a tithing story or a testimony of tithing.
Something I like to do is ask the students if they have ever had too many clothes that they can't fit them all in their dresser drawers. Or if they have so many dishes that they don't all fit in the dishes washer. So many blessings we can't hold them all, so much food to eat, too many clothes to wear, this is a good problem, we are so blessed. (Not everyone has this situation..go by the spirit and needs of your students)
I hope this doesn't focus on the negative. But if we don't pay tithing we are missing out on the blessings of the temple. The blessings that come from the temple are more blessings than we have "room enough to receive."
These are my thoughts, but I definitely don't want to lecture, so I will guide the discussion with questions, and be open to where the students take the discussion.
What is the law of tithing? (See Doctrine and Covenants 119. “Interest” in this revelation means income. All members who have income should pay tithing.) How is tithing different from other kinds of donations?
What is tithing used for? You can find a partial list in Gospel Topics, “Tithing” (Gospel Library). In what ways have you been blessed because members of the Church pay tithing?
What blessings come to people who live the law of tithing? (See 3 Nephi 24:7–12). You can find some described in Elder David A. Bednar’s message “The Windows of Heaven” (Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2013, 17–20). Look, in particular, for blessings that are not necessarily monetary. How have you seen these blessings in your life?
Here is a fun way to learn these principals, but don't forget those awesome questions the manual recommends asking, as you do this activity.
Set up your board like this:
The board art and scriptures are in my store.
There are 6 pages of cards that look like these (below). You don't have to use all the cards, especially for 12 year olds, thats a lot of reading. Go through an select the cards that will be best for your class, but make sure there are some for each category.
If you use all the cards it will look like this when you are done reading, discussing, and sorting the cards.
If you have time you can add these questions in each category. I always think it's a good idea to separate the youth into groups, you can do this here. Three groups can each discuss the questions and share with the class.
It would look something like this when you are all done:
This is in the lesson bundle, but some people like to purchase it separately. They sale mini Twix at Dollar tree.
This is so fun, I've done it with my youth, if you click on the image it won't take you to Etsy right away, it will give you an explanation of how to play this game.
I was going to wait till after Halloween, but people are thinking about Christmas now.
I have some more coming but this is what I have now.
You may also want to watch the video “Jesus Teaches about the Widow’s Mite” (Gospel Library), or read Mark 12:41–44. What does this story teach you?
The Lord sent Elijah to turn my heart to my ancestors.
In our day, our hearts are “turned to [our] fathers” through temple and family history work. How has this happened for you? As you read 3 Nephi 25:5–6 and Doctrine and Covenants 110:13–16, ponder why this is such an important part of God’s plan.
