Come Follow Me 2024, Aug 26-Sept 1, Free LDS primary lesson helps, object lessons, Pride cycle, Jenga blocks, building a foundation on Jesus Christ, 4th article of Faith

Ideas for Teaching Children

Heavenly Father wants me to be humble.

  • Consider inviting your children to draw their own version of the “pride cycle,” based on the diagram above. Then, as you read together Helaman 3:24, 33–34 and 4:11–15, they could point to the parts of the cycle these verses describe. How can we choose to be humble—and remain that way?

Older students can match the scripture to the words. I don't see younger primary students understanding this idea, but I've noticed the primary manual is now starting with a more complex teaching.

For younger students I would review this puzzle ( from an old lesson) and just remind them what it means to be humble.

If you want the big floor puzzle you can go to the old lesson HERE.

Pop Rocks sold in a package of 3 at Dollar Tree.

An alternative to a snack-less gift, but you will need to have access to a 3d printer. My son designed this to look like a rock.

I will build my foundation on Jesus Christ.

  • Consider using a picture of a temple to start a conversation about why buildings need strong foundations. Or you could look at the foundation of your home or Church building.

This is something you would need a chalk board for. If you don't want to use the rocks you can just have them draw one under the temple, when they mention something they can do to build their foundation on Christ.

What can I do to build a foundation on Christ?

You can download this HERE

There is also this printable:

  • To emphasize the strength of a rock-solid foundation, your children could try to move a rock by blowing on it.

    Here is a fun idea:

I would actually start the lesson with this object lesson...an attention getter that you can refer back to throughout the lesson.

For older students:

Tape these on Jenga blocks and have the students put them in the correct order to complete the scripture and the article of faith. Then they can build with them.

Be sure To asked the inspired questions from the manual: why Jesus Christ is “a sure foundation” for our lives. How can we build our lives on Him?  You can even take the sorting Jenga a step farther and have them sort the things in the scriptures that help us build on Christ...like Believe on the name of Jesus Christ, lay hold upon the word of God etc.

For Younger students you can help them answer the question of how we can build on Christ, with this 4th article of Faith puzzle.

  • Invite your children to build a tower using blocks or other materials on different kinds of foundations (such as cotton balls or a flat stone). How is the solid foundation like Jesus Christ? They could add a block to the structure for each idea they share about what they can do to follow Him.

The Holy Ghost whispers with a still, small voice.

From here down, the printable's are in my store:

  • When you talk about the voice the people heard, speak in a soft voice. Repeat the story a few times, and invite the children to whisper with you. Help them think of other ways that the Holy Ghost can speak to us. To reinforce this principle, you could sing together “The Still Small Voice” (Children’s Songbook, 106–7).

Repentance replaces spiritual darkness with light.

  • To emphasize what Helaman 5:20–41 teaches about darkness and light, try reading or summarizing these verses in the dark, using just a flashlight for light. Your children could listen for what the people needed to do so the darkness would be removed. Then turn the lights on, and read verses 42–48 together. What do these verses teach us about repentance?

I really love this idea! If you have glow sticks you can add a little more light with each verse.
